Purpose And Very Brief History Of The SIG

The purpose of the Sir Walter Raleigh Society is to provide a forum for those who are interested in discussing the effects of cigar and cigarette smoking on society.

The Sir Walter Raleigh Society was formed on July 4, 2002 at the Phoenix AG in response to the previously unannounced closing of the Smoking Hospitality Room which was provided by the AG committee.

After politely trying to ascertain the reason for the room closure, the so-called "Phoenix Six" committed an act of civil disobedience by returning to the designated Smoking Hospitality Room and smoking.  One member of the Phoenix Six, Brad McCabe had given up smoking, but socialized in the Smoking Hospitality Room and joined in the civil disobedience, as he felt that "this is where my friends are."
