Smokingreprinted from OCT 2002 Mensa Bulletin |

Gene Holmerud How I wish J. Andrew Howe was realistic about Mensans being too smart to smoke and could therefore influence our representatives. As any RG or AG chair can attest, while the number of members that smoke is declining, it seems those who hold on are becoming fiercer. They clearly demonstrate the disparity between potential and practice when it comes to IQ. There is rumbling of forming a SIG just to ensure that they're accommodated at Gatherings. Future Gatherings need to plan on accommodating probably 5 percent of attendees with separate ventilation, in-room air filtering, and/or substantial physical separation from other SIGs and functions regardless of the practicality of such a setup. A demonstration of the disparity mentioned above actually occurred at the AG in Arizona. A shady outside location was provided, yet it was claimed to be too hot outside to be healthy. Perhaps not smoking could have been considered as a path to health. |
